Bridal Party Jobs 101 (Bride Edition): How to Be the Best Support on the Day
If you’ve been asked to be part of someone’s bridal party, first of all, congrats! It means you’re one of their favourite people. But once the excitement kicks in, you might start to wonder… what exactly does this involve?
After photographing hundreds of weddings across Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire, I’ve seen just about every kind of bridal party dynamic you can imagine, from the super-organised groups with spreadsheets to the ones winging it (and somehow still nailing it).
So, here’s a bit of friendly advice to help you know what to expect, what your jobs might include and how to be the best possible support on the day.
The Calm in the Chaos
Weddings are emotional, busy and full of moving parts. One of the best things you can do for the bride is to stay calm. Keep things light, make them laugh and be that person who helps the morning feel relaxed rather than rushed.
A calm energy really does set the tone for the day. It also shows in the photos!
The Fixer
Being the person who quietly sorts things without fuss is worth its weight in gold. Veils, bouquets, lipstick smudges, buttonholes, ties…make sure to see the tiny details that your friend won’t have time to notice in the moment.
I can usually help with some of these (and often do!), but having someone from the bridal party on hand makes a huge difference. Keep a few essentials handy like safety pins, tissues, plasters and a mini sewing kit. It might sound small, but having these at the ready makes a world of difference.
The couple might not even notice how many fires you’ve quietly put out, but they’ll definitely feel how smooth everything seemed.
The Organiser
Even with a wedding coordinator or venue team, it helps to have someone in the bridal party who’s got an eye on the plan. Know when things are happening, like when the cars are arriving or when the photographer’s due, and please help make sure everyone’s ready on time!
Being that steady, organised person helps take the pressure off the bride. They don’t need to check the clock or chase anyone up, because you’ve already got it covered. It’s one of those behind-the-scenes roles that keeps the whole morning ticking along nicely.
The Gatherer
If there’s one thing that can make or break the flow of wedding photos, it’s how quickly we can round up the right people for group shots. There’s always someone who’s wandered off to chat, gone to the loo or nipped to the bar! That’s where you come in.
Helping the photographer gather family members or friends for photos keeps things moving and makes the whole process more relaxed. You’ll save time, keep spirits high and make sure everyone gets back to the celebrations quicker.
The Snack Provider
I can’t stress this one enough, food is fuel! Wedding mornings are busy and it’s surprisingly easy for people to forget to eat. Pack a few easy snacks like cereal bars, fruit, or crackers and keep water on hand too. No one wants to get light-headed halfway through photos or speeches.
It’s a small gesture that keeps everyone feeling their best and stops anyone from getting hangry!
The Hype Squad
Finally, and most importantly, be the energy. You’re there to help celebrate one of your favourite people, so lean into it! Cheer during the speeches, hit the dance floor early and keep the positive energy flowing from start to finish. The more fun you have, the more fun everyone around you will have too.
And from behind the camera, I can tell you from experience that the fun that the bridal party brings is what makes the day truly unforgettable.
If you’re currently planning your own wedding and looking for a wedding photographer in Aberdeenshire, or want to chat more about your wedding day details, I’d love to hear from you!
