The REAL Jobs Your Bridal Party Actually End Up Doing on the Wedding Day

When my couples start thinking about their bridal party, the focus is usually on the obvious parts of the day. Who they want standing beside them during the ceremony, who they want getting ready with them and who they can’t imagine celebrating without.

But as a wedding photographer, I’ve noticed that bridal parties play a much bigger role than couples initially expect. There are lots of small jobs that are essential throughout a wedding day that nobody necessarily plans for in advance. They’re not official responsibilities, but they’re the moments where having a few people around you who know what’s going on can make the whole day flow much more smoothly!

Knowing these things in advance can actually make things much easier, both for couples and for the people supporting them.

After the ceremony, everyone naturally wants to catch up and congratulate the newlyweds. It’s one of my favourite parts of the day to photograph, but it also means people can quickly disappear when it’s time to start the formal photos.

There’s ALWAYS someone who has gone to the bar, someone chatting outside or a family member who hasn’t realised they’re needed next. So this is where having a bridesmaid, groomsman or close family member who knows everyone can save so much time. They can help find people, let them know where they need to be and make the whole process feel much more relaxed and organised.

A photographer can sort the photos, but we don’t always know what your family members look like or who belongs where. Having someone from your side helping with this genuinely makes a huge difference!

Wedding days involve a surprising amount of items!

The rings before the ceremony. The bouquet between photos. The emergency kit. The speeches. The cards and gifts. A phone that someone needs before the couple disappear for portraits…

It’s very common for the bridal party to become the people who know where everything is. This is especially helpful during the getting ready part of the morning. There can be lots happening at once, with suppliers arriving and everyone preparing to leave for the ceremony. Having someone who knows where the important bits are means the couple don’t need to be answering questions or trying to remember everything themselves. A simple conversation before the wedding day about who is looking after what can save a lot of stress.

On the wedding day, guests naturally have lots of questions.

“Where do we leave cards?”

“Which room is the ceremony in?”

“Where should we go after the drinks reception?”

“When are we sitting down for dinner?”

The couple usually don’t need to be answering these questions themselves, especially during moments where they should be enjoying time with their guests.

Although the wedding venue will often have a co-ordinator present, having a few members of the bridal party who know the rough timings and venue layout means they can point people in the right direction too. This is particularly helpful at larger venues across Aberdeenshire where there might be different areas being used throughout the day.

Wedding days pass so quickly. After months of planning, it can be surprisingly easy for couples to get caught up in everything happening around them and forget to actually take a moment to enjoy it.

Your bridal party are often the people who notice this happening and step in to ensure you get to enjoy your day too. They’re the ones who might remind you to grab some food during the drinks reception because they know you’ve been talking to guests for the last hour. They’re the ones who make sure you have a drink in your hand, or encourage you to take five minutes together before heading into the next part of the day.

These little things might not feel super important at the time, but they’re often what allow couples to look back and remember how much they actually enjoyed their wedding day!

The morning of a wedding can feel like one of the most exciting parts of the day, but it can also be when lots is happening at once. Having a bridal party member nearby who can help keep things moving can be really useful, especially when the couple are busy getting ready and don’t want to be thinking about timings or practical details.

This might be checking that everyone is ready when the photographer arrives, helping gather people for photos during preparations or simply noticing when something needs sorted before the ceremony begins.

There are also often moments just before walking down the aisle where someone needs to step in. A veil might need adjusted, a buttonhole might need fixed, a dress might need straightened or someone might need a quick reminder to take a breath before the ceremony starts.

These are the moments where having people around you who know you well is so valuable. They can help without making a fuss, keeping the nerves at bay.

Your bridal party don’t need to spend the day worrying about every detail or feeling like they’re responsible for making sure everything runs perfectly. Their main job is to enjoy the day with you, but having people around you who know when to step in can make such a difference.

After shooting many weddings across Aberdeenshire, I’ve seen how helpful it is when couples have a few trusted people nearby who can help with the practical side of the day, whether that’s gathering family members for photos, answering guest questions or sorting something before it becomes a distraction.

These aren’t things you necessarily think about when you’re planning your wedding, but they’re often what help the day feel much more relaxed and enjoyable once it arrives.
